Q & A with Kristina Solovyova

We hear, "It's all about the bikes" all the time in this industry. People are devoted to the craft of designing, building and fixing motorcycles, assigning them a deity-like status. They exist as extensions of ourselves, and take on personalities and their own priority place in our lives. Is "it" really all about the bikes, though? Can it be? I constantly argue that it cannot be and, more pointed, should not be. The people around us help to define our lives, lives of which we convince ourselves that we are the sole masters.  Yet, the influence of others often has more sway than any choice we've ever made. Incredibly, this means that our lives can adopt the beauty of people who, by chance or fate, enter them.

I had such an experience having crossed paths with Kristina Soloyvova, a Russian model and photographer from Saint Petersburg. She had worked with Lesia Sito, who I interviewed last time. Once again, Russia did not disappoint with its talent, beauty and raw majesty. Kristina happily agreed to an interview, and I am equally pleased to present a small insight into her life and the creative prowess of Saint Petersburg.

You live in Saint Petersburg, Russia, but what city feels most like home to you?
I'm still looking for my home. The whole world is really amazing and beautiful, but so far there has not been a place where I would say: "Yes, I can stay here for a long time, it's perfect for me!"

How do you spend your days and nights? How much is work, and how much is play?
I am constantly working. I only really relax when I feel that I have completely lost all my strength; then I know it's time to rest and restart.

You are both a model and a photographer, which is rare. Which do you prefer and why? Which came first?
At the moment, I find that I'm more in front of the camera lens. Modeling came before photography. I really like modeling, but it was always just for fun. Now, I want to be on a more serious level with that. But I try to do everything at the same time, both modeling and photography. I really like being on both sides of the camera! The desire to make my vision in this world is ever-present.

How does your work in modeling help your photography?
It has always been important for me to accept each person's vision. I work with different photographers, so I watch how they work with me and then learn from them something new, in principle, as well as from anyone. Each person is a teacher for us, it's very interesting.

What inspires your photography? What do you hope to convey through your images?
My inspirations: environment, emotions, music, sounds of life. Through each photo I capture, I want to convey happiness and love to everyone that I see and feel. To me, it's great if this is experienced by the viewer.

What advice can you give to young, beginner models who hope to be successful?
I believe that it is very important to listen to your heart, the happiness is to find harmony with yourself, with your mind and soul--they will lead you, just listen! Everything is as it should be and nothing else.

Many females, especially young ladies, struggle with negative self-image and believe they are not beautiful. Many compare themselves to “perfect” girls on Instagram and magazines and feel they can never be as good. What would you tell these girls?
We are all in our own way beautiful and individual; it is very important to understand this! No one will ever be like another person; it is impossible and not necessary! Be like yourself; make yourself better every day, and you will see to what happiness this will lead.  You will love yourself and accept yourself! Is this not our task? :)

You yourself seem to be without flaws. Do you have any that you will confess?
I, like everyone has their own shortcomings, that is normal! I work on mine all the time. Working on myself makes me happier; the main thing is not to stop!

You travel quite a bit and seem to really enjoy it. What does travel do for you?
Yes this is true! I have had a taste of travel, and I want to know the world more and more! Travel helps us to open up, to correct our vision in general. And I feel such euphoria when I travel. Mmmm, it is divine!

What has been your favorite place you've visited, and why is it so wonderful?

My favorite and best place is the mountains of Kazbegi, Georgia. I madly love mountains. They are such great natural massifs that take my breath away, and when I am among them, I have such an incredible feeling!

Not everyone can travel; what advice can you give for people who must stay close to home?
I think if you really want something and, of course, you do your best to achieve this goal, the universe will help you. It's true--sometimes you do not even notice how things happen that you so much desired. Everyone should travel, even if only a little.

You love motorcycles, but what about them do you love? Do you have any favorites?
Yes, I really like motorcycles. Their brutality and detailed beauty is very attractive to me. My favorites are  Harley-Davidsons and all the cafe racers.

Kristina not only stuns in front of the camera, but she is also a devoted photographer, as mentioned above. Her travels always include photographing the scenes which move her, but she also captures life at home in Saint Petersburg. Her style and vision is uniquely honest with a surgical precision in her compositions.
